What can I expect from the complimentary meet and greet?

A free 15-minute consultation is a chance for us to briefly connect, get a sense of what you’re looking for support with, and see whether I might be a good fit for you. You’re welcome to ask questions about my approach, what counselling sessions look like, or anything else you’d like to know before getting started. There’s no pressure or commitment to book ongoing sessions—it’s simply an opportunity to connect and see how it feels!

Do you offer direct billing?

While covered by most benefit and insurance plans, I do not offer direct billing. A receipt is emailed to you following payment and this can be provided to your insurance provider for reimbursement. It is important to check with your insurance provider to ensure that you have coverage for a registered clinical counsellor (RCC).

How does confidentiality work?

Confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe and trusting counselling relationship. What you share in counselling is kept private, with a few important exceptions required by law or professional standards. These may include situations where there is a serious risk of harm, concerns about the safety or wellbeing of a child or vulnerable person, or when information is otherwise required to be disclosed by law.For online sessions I take steps to protect your privacy and use secure, privacy-conscious technology for virtual counselling. I recommend joining sessions from a private space where you feel comfortable speaking openly and ensuring that others cannot overhear the session.Your child’s privacy is important in building trust and safety. Sessions with your child are kept confidential, while still keeping parents informed about general themes, progress, and ways to support at home. If there are any safety concerns, I will always communicate those with you.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask that clients provide me with 48 hours notice for cancellations or to reschedule your appointment. Late cancellations or missed sessions may be charged the full session fee. I recognize that sick kids and family emergencies do not always come with a warning, and I use discretion with regards to applying late cancellation fees.

Person-centred counselling focuses on you as a whole person and aims to create a supportive, respectful space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace. The approach is grounded in understanding your unique needs and goals.

Do you work with neurodivergent families?

Yes! I welcome neurodivergent individuals and families and aim to create a supportive, neuro-affirming space. I recognize that every person and family is different, and I take a flexible, person-centred approach that honours each family’s unique needs, strengths, communication styles, and experiences.Parenting a neurodivergent child can come with unique and ongoing demands, and having a space to process your experiences, prioritize your own needs, and receive support can be an important part of preventing or recovering from caregiver burnout. I believe that supporting parents and caregivers is an important part of supporting the whole family.

What can I expect from a parent support session?

Parent support sessions are a space for you to pause, feel heard, and focus on your own needs while navigating the challenges of parenting. We can talk through the things that are feeling overwhelming, explore patterns or stressors that may be contributing to burnout, and work together to find strategies and perspectives that feel realistic for your family.Whether you need help navigating day-to-day challenges and behaviours, managing stress and burnout, or simply having a place to talk openly, sessions are tailored to where you are and what you need.

How does billing work?

I accept payment via etransfer to info@amysomervillecounselling.ca, Cash payment is also accepted. Once payment is received, a receipt is provided to you that can be provided to your extended health provider. I work with providers such as Autism Funding Program and the Community Brain Injury Program. If you are accessing services through a funder, we can go over the billing process together.

What is Synergetic Play Therapy?

Synergetic Play Therapy is a research-informed model of play therapy that combines the therapeutic benefits of play with principles of nervous system regulation, interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, mindfulness and therapist authenticity. Through a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship, children can explore their feelings, build emotional regulation skills, and develop a greater sense of safety and connection—all at their own pace. Synergetic Play Therapy is a great fit for children working through challenging behaviours, big emotions or worries, aggression, fostering interoception, building their emotional vocabulary and more!

What can I expect from child therapy?

Child therapy offers your child a safe, welcoming space to be themselves, express what they’re feeling, and work through the things they may be struggling with. Depending on their age and needs, sessions may involve play, creativity, conversation, or other activities that help them understand their emotions, build coping skills, and feel more confident. Parents and caregivers are an important part of the process too, and we’ll work together to support your child both in and outside of sessions.
